Serakunda

The Gambia · West Africa

Tours along the river, the coast and the upcountry roads — led by guides who grew up on these banks. Small groups, unhurried days, and the kind of trip where you come back knowing the names of the birds.

What we run

Every itinerary below is a starting point, not a package. Tell us how long you have and what you want to see, and we build the days around that.

A narrow creek running between mangroves

Half day

River & mangroves

Out early while the water is still flat. We take a small boat into the creeks where the mangroves close over the channel, cut the engine, and drift. Kingfishers, herons, the occasional monitor lizard on a low branch. On the way back we stop at a fishing landing site and watch the pirogues come in.

  • 4–5 hours

Full day

Birding the wetlands

The Gambia sits on a major migration route, and the wetlands north of the river hold some of the densest birdlife in the region. We move slowly, with binoculars and a scope, and a checklist you can keep. Good for complete beginners and for people with a life list already running.

Produce laid out on stalls at a busy West African market

Full day

Markets & craft villages

A day in the places people actually shop. We start at a produce market in the morning when it is loudest, then drive out to a weaving village and a pottery village where the work is done by hand in the open air. We talk about what things cost, what is fair, and how to buy without being a spectacle.

  • Departs [time]
  • Full day
  • Lunch included
A quiet road running through open country towards distant trees

2–3 days

Upcountry & the river

East along the river to the quieter stretches — small villages, a ferry crossing, and nights in simple lodgings where the power goes off at midnight and the sky does the rest. This is the trip people remember longest. We plan it around your comfort level, and we can keep it gentle.

  • 2–3 days
  • Transport + lodging
Wooden fishing boats pulled up on a sandy shore

Half day

Coast & fishing villages

South of the river, where the Atlantic meets the estuary. We walk a stretch of beach at low tide, visit a village where the boats are built by hand from single trees, and end with grilled fish somewhere that has no sign.

How a trip comes together

  1. You tell us the basics

When you are coming, how many of you, how long you have, and what you actually want out of the trip. Two sentences is enough to start.

  2. We send a plan, not a brochure

A day-by-day outline with realistic driving times, what is included, and what we think you should skip. If something you asked for is not worth the drive, we say so.

  3. We agree a price before anything is booked

One figure for the group, covering guide, transport and the entries we listed. No per-person surprises on the day, no commission stops at shops you did not ask for.

  4. We meet you where you are staying

Pickup from your hotel, guesthouse or the airport. We confirm the time the evening before, and we turn up when we said we would.

Who you are travelling with

A guide standing outdoors, looking out over the landscape
[Your name], founder — replace with a photo of you or your team.

Serakunda is a small tour outfit working out of [Town / region, The Gambia]. We keep the groups small on purpose — it is the difference between being shown a country and being walked through it.

Our guides are from the communities we visit. That matters for two reasons. First, you get the version of a place that a guidebook cannot give you: who is related to whom, which market stall is worth your time, what the bird is called here. Second, the money stays where the trip happens rather than passing through a hotel desk in the capital.

We are not a big operation and we do not want to be. We would rather run fewer trips properly than fill a bus. If you want a schedule that runs to the minute and a commentary script, we are the wrong choice — and we will tell you that up front.

Practical things

When to come

The dry season runs roughly November to May — clear skies, comfortable mornings, and the best birding as the migrants arrive. The green season from June brings heat, humidity and afternoon rain, but also a landscape that is completely transformed and far fewer visitors. Both are worth it; they are just different trips.

What to bring

Light long sleeves for the early mornings, a hat, sun cream, and shoes you do not mind getting muddy. Binoculars if you have them — we carry spares. A refillable water bottle, because we can top it up rather than hand you plastic all day.

Access & pace

Most of our days involve short walks on uneven ground rather than long hikes. Tell us about mobility, dietary needs or anything else that shapes the day, and we will plan around it rather than improvise on the morning.

Payment

[Deposit amount and how it is paid]. The balance is settled [on arrival / before departure]. We will confirm the details in writing with your itinerary.

Questions we get asked

Is The Gambia safe to travel in?

It is one of the more relaxed countries in the region and tourism is a large part of the economy. The usual care applies — normal precautions in markets and at night, and we stay with you throughout. We will tell you honestly if there is anywhere we would not take you.

Do I need to be fit?

No. Our days are built around walking at conversation pace with plenty of sitting and looking. If you can manage a couple of hours on your feet with breaks, you will be fine. Tell us if that is not the case and we will adjust.

Can you collect us from the airport?

Yes. Give us your flight number and arrival time and we will be there. If your flight is delayed we track it rather than leaving you to work it out.

Are the tours private or shared?

Both. Most of what we run is private for your group, which is why the price is quoted for the group rather than per head. On some fixed departures we can pair you with another small group if you would like to share the cost.

What about children?

Families are welcome and we run plenty of trips with children. We will suggest shorter days and more stops, and we will say if a particular itinerary is a bad fit for the ages you are travelling with.

Do you arrange accommodation?

We can recommend places we know and book them on your behalf where that helps, or work around whatever you have already booked. We do not take a markup on rooms.

Plan a trip

Tell us roughly what you have in mind and we will come back with a plan and a price. There is no obligation and no deposit until you are happy with the itinerary.
